Getting to Pokhara

Everything you need to know about reaching Pokhara, Nepal. From international flights to local transport, we've got you covered.

Getting to Nepal

Most international travelers fly into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu, Nepal's only international airport. From there, you have two main options to reach Pokhara: a 25-minute domestic flight or a 6-7 hour scenic drive/bus ride through the mountains.

Kathmandu airport handles 30+ international airlines including major carriers from Asia, Middle East, and some European connections. Common routes: Bangkok (3hr), Delhi (1.5hr), Singapore (5hr), Doha (5hr), Dubai (4hr). Most nationalities receive visa on arrival - no advance application needed.

We can arrange airport pickup in Pokhara for all retreat and teacher training participants. Just let us know your arrival details at least 24 hours in advance.

Step-by-Step: Your Journey to Pokhara

Here's exactly what to expect from international arrival to reaching our yoga center

1

1. Arrive at Kathmandu Airport

Land at Tribhuvan International (KTM). Follow signs for "Visa on Arrival" before immigration. Fill arrival card (available on plane or at kiosks). Pay visa fee at counter ($30/15 days, $50/30 days, $125/90 days). Proceed through immigration with stamped passport. Collect baggage and exit.

2

2. Domestic Transfer or Tourist Bus

Domestic terminal is separate from international - about 10-minute walk or free shuttle. If flying to Pokhara, check in at domestic terminal (Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines most reliable). If taking tourist bus, exit airport and taxi to tourist bus station (Sorhakhutte area, NPR 500-800 from airport). Tourist buses depart early morning (7-8 AM typically).

3

3. Journey to Pokhara

Flight: 25 minutes, spectacular Himalayan views (sit on right side for best mountains). Domestic flights run 6-7 times daily. Bus: 6-7 hours along scenic Prithvi Highway following Trisuli River. Tourist buses have reclining seats, AC, bathroom stops. Private car option also available with pre-booking.

4

4. Arrive in Pokhara

If flying: Pokhara Airport is small and easy to navigate. Exit and find taxi/our driver. If by bus: Tourist buses arrive at Pokhara bus station (near Mustang Chowk). From both arrival points, our yoga center in Ghachowk is 20-30 minutes by vehicle.

5

5. Reach Ghachowk

We arrange complimentary pickup for retreat/YTT participants. For drop-in students, taxis from Lakeside cost NPR 800-1,200 (~$6-9). The journey climbs from Lakeside through beautiful countryside to our mountain location. Road is paved throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

International flights: 2-3 months ahead for best prices and seat selection. Domestic Kathmandu-Pokhara flights: During peak season (Oct-Nov, Mar-Apr), book 1-2 weeks ahead as flights fill up. Off-season: Often available just a few days before, sometimes even day-of. Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines are most reliable.
Yes. The Prithvi Highway is Nepal's main highway and generally safe. Tourist buses are comfortable, well-maintained, and have experienced drivers familiar with mountain roads. The journey offers beautiful river valley and terraced hillside views. Road quality improved significantly in recent years, though some winding sections require careful driving.
Domestic flights can be delayed or canceled due to weather (fog in winter, storms in monsoon). Airlines typically reschedule you on next available flight, usually same day. Alternatively, take tourist bus (readily available from Kathmandu). Build in 1-day buffer if arriving for scheduled program. We stay in contact and adjust pickup accordingly.
Yes, visa counters at Kathmandu airport now accept credit/debit cards. However, cash (USD, EUR, GBP) is faster as card processing can be slow during busy times. Bring exact amount if possible: $30 (15 days), $50 (30 days), or $125 (90 days). ATMs available in arrival hall if you need local currency.
Yes! We provide free Pokhara airport pickup for all retreat and teacher training participants. We can also recommend reliable domestic flight booking, trusted taxi drivers, and tourist bus companies. Contact us with your international flight details and we'll guide you through the Kathmandu → Pokhara → Ghachowk journey step-by-step.
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, trip cancellation, and lost baggage. Nepal's remote areas can require helicopter evacuation for serious injuries (very expensive without insurance). Policies should cover adventure activities if you plan to trek. World Nomads and SafetyWing are popular with yoga travelers.
